I have now pitched my idea and practical treatments to my tutors in a 3 minute presentation. When putting my pitch together I found it challenging to fit everything I wanted to say into 3 minutes, however I found it helped when I broke the pitch down into sections.
In the pitch I discussed recent research that I had found which I thought made the topic of gender neutral parenting relevant for a multimedia project now. I also discussed what I wanted to specifically find out around the topic of gender neutral parenting, potential interviewees I wanted to get and practical treatments for my project.
I pitched that my target broadcaster will be BBC Radio 4 as I felt the topic would best suit an audience of an older demographic. During my research I also found out that Women’s Hour had discussed the topic of gender neutrality multiple times but there has been no dedicated radio documentary about the topic. As my target broadcaster is the BBC I also discussed commitment to impartiality and as my project is about parenting, the fact that I would stick to the BBC’s guidelines on children as contributors.
Overall I think the pitch went well as I managed to get across all the different elements to my pitch within 3 minutes. I made it very clear what I wanted to find out and how I was going to go about it, which my tutors mentioned as a positive in my feedback. Taking into consideration the feedback from my tutors, if I was to do the pitch again I would include my research statistics that I verbally pitched on the physical handout. I would also try to present the pitch more confidently and with more enthusiasm, which I would do by practising in front of more people beforehand.
Clearly the challenge coming away from the pitch, which my tutors stressed, is that my project lives and dies by finding a case study. If I can get someone who can speak passionately about why they’re bringing their children up gender neutral then the project has really good potential. Then if I find a good case study my tutors said I should consider changing the practical treatment to a 7 minute radio documentary with a production blog.
UPDATE: I received 68% for my pitch which I am pleased with. In my feedback my tutors said I made it very clear in my pitch what I wanted to explore in terms of gender neutral parenting. However they stressed the importance of finding a good case study that will act as the foundation for my documentary.
I have also now changed my format to a 7 minute radio documentary as I feel it will give me more scope to explore the topic and allow me to be more creative with my interviews.
