Alex Mees is a father to a four-year-old boy and one-year-old girl. Along with his wife he brings up his two children with gender neutral principles. They decided this before their son was born after researching more into the idea.

Gender neutral principles comes into the clothes his children wear, the books they read and the toys they play with:

"We were always mindful when we were buying something, whether it's toys or clothes, would we be happy buying this for a daughter as well?"

Critics of gender neutral parenting call the idea drastic but Alex makes it clear that this style of parenting doesn't mean hiding the concept of gender from his children:

"We do talk about the anatomical differences but what we're not saying is women are the ones who stay home and look after the children, and men are the ones who go to work. It's about being very scientific I guess about what the actual differences between men and women are."
