CAMPAIGN GROUP: LET TOYS BE TOYS
Let Toys Be Boys are a group campaigning for the toy and publishing industries to stop dividing their products into gender categories. They believe this is limiting children's interests and that children should have the freedom to chose without retailers or manufacturers deciding for them.

They started in 2012 by asking retailers to take the signs down that labelled toys for boys and toys for girls. To date they have had 14 major UK retailers take these signs down.

I spoke to Tessa who is part of the campaign group. She explained to me why Let Toys be Toys think retailers should stop dividing their toys by gender.

Some retailers may be opposed to the idea because they think it'll limit their profits to have all the toys in one section. However Tessa explained how this hasn't actually been the case.

"You're limiting fifty percent of your market by making a toy only for boys or only for girls. And actually we haven't had any retailers or publishers come back to say when they have stopped labelling the toys their sales have decreased."

The campaign has had great success to date, and Tessa tells me about what they have planned for the future which involves working with toy and book manufacturers and schools.
