Gender neutral parenting has been a hot topic in the media over the past year or so. Well known celebrities, such as Russell Brand or Paloma Faith, have said they will be raising their children gender neutral. John Lewis even became the first UK retailer to go gender neutral with their children’s clothing range. However this rise of this non-traditional style of parenting has also proved controversial.

For my multimedia project I want to delve even deeper into this world of gender neutral parenting. I want to find out:

  • Who are the parents adopting this idea?

  • How are the lifestyle choices they’re making for children different from others?

  • Is it as radical a concept as it appears on the surface?

My main media element will be radio and at the moment my main piece is going to be 3 minutes and I will have extra audio, video and written elements. I want to find case studies of parents that are bringing up their children gender neutral that will be the main focus on my 3 minute audio and extra video. I also want to speak to a children’s psychology expert to find out if this style of parenting is beneficial and a toy or clothing company who have successfully incorporated gender neutrality into their brand.

The next stage will be to prepare a pitch for the 20th October where I will put across my idea and the practical treatments I have planned for it.
