Alex's Interview
After listening back to my interview with Alex I have decided that I want to use him as the main case study in my 7 minute radio documentary. I found that he has addressed the main questions that I have wanted to explore with my documentary which are:
- Why have you chosen to bring your child up gender neutral?
- How does this practically fit it in to their everyday life?
From the interview I have 30 minutes of recorded audio so I think one of my main challenges is going to be cutting down the interview and finding the clips that will really stand out which will feature in my documentary. I have already divided the interview into sections but these are still 1-2 minutes long so need cutting down even further, as the clips for a Radio 4 documentary can't be too long and need to be attention grabbing.
Upcoming Interviews
As well as case studies I have wanted my documentary to feature a psychology expert as I want to address the question:
- Do the typical traits of masculinity and femininity come from parenting or are we are born with them?
After researching into psychologists whose expertise are in gender, I came across Dr Christia Brown based in America. She has written a book called 'Parenting Beyond Pink and Blue: How to Raise Your Kids Free of Gender Stereotypes'. In the book she discusses how to help parents focus on their child's individual strengths rather than gender stereotypes. I also found she is an expert that other news outlets have spoken to when discussing gender neutral parenting, so I was keen to get in contact with her. As she is based in America I have arranged a Skype interview with her in the upcoming weeks.
Whilst looking for case studies to interview I also came across this blog post written by mother of three Quinn Savard. In the blog post Quinn describes her experience of what it's been like bringing up her daughter gender neutral. I found her blog post very moving and honest, so I got in contact with her and have also arranged an interview in the upcoming weeks via Skype. I think it'll be interesting to compare her and Alex's experiences of what it has been like bringing up their children gender neutral.
